What's the best way to read?
The best way to read is slow and close. That's not very academic, but it is the best kind of reading.
Reading slow and close improves your sense of words and your understanding of a text. You can't read faster than you think. Most writers are slow steady readers. They may just examine a paragraph or one page of a story, absorbing the language as they feel their ways along through the text.
Academic reading is about processing information rapidly to answer questions on a test. But academic reading does not lead to efficient and effective reading. Let's face it, if you can read a page in sixty seconds and speed ahead to the next page, there's probably not much in the text to think about.
